South Beach Wine & Food Festival spurs plenty of spillover parties - Miami-Dade - MiamiHerald.com: " . . . . Miami restaurateur Michael Schwartz is not personally participating in any official festival events this year, but his Genuine Hospitality Group is bringing in out-of-town chefs to host pop-up dinners at Harry’s Pizzeria and Michael’s Genuine Food and Drink, in addition to the Gramercy Tavern dinner at Cypress Room. Other events you won’t find on the festival’s website: Pubbelly Steak had a $125-a-person wine dinner Wednesday, and its flagship sibling Pubbelly will be passing out free bites of pork after midnight. New York bar The Dead Rabbit is taking over the stick at Patpong Road on Friday and Saturday, and master mixologist Jacques Bezuidenhout will shake up free tequila cocktails at the Social Club on Friday. Riding the festival’s coattails makes good business sense, said Pagano of Naked Taco. “For chefs, hospitality and service-industry pros, this week is our Super Bowl,” he said."

The Legendary, Soon-to-Be-Revived, Surf Club, Miami Beach

“When I die, I don’t want to go to heaven. I want to go to the Surf Club.” -- Miami society reporter 1962 (from new photobook from Assouline)

Gallery | A New Book Looks Back at Miami Beach's Legendary, Soon-to-Be-Revived Surf Club:
"Opened in 1930, the Surf Club was situated on more than six acres of prime beachfront property in the Surfside neighborhood. The Mediterranean-revival-style villa, designed by Russell Pancoast, was decorated with zebra-skin sofas and cabanas as far as the eye could see, and offered a signature drink — the Mangareva cocktail — as well as poolside fashion shows, debutante balls and black-tie boxing nights, all for the enjoyment of its gilded guests. And there were plenty of them — from Hollywood royalty such as Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra to political dignitaries including the Shah of Iran and Winston Churchill. The former prime minister spent so much time at the Surf Club, in fact, that he had two cabanas at his disposal: one for afternoon naps, and the other used for painting. . . ." South Beach, new every visit

- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "... My husband, Bob, and I return to Miami's South Beach because it is never the same. This Southern city-that-never-sleeps is vibrant with cutting-edge art, restaurants, architecture and intensity. South Beach constantly reimagines and reinvents itself. When our luck holds, the weather is balmy, the food is exciting, and even though the vacationing mostly international population transports itself by taxi, bus, bike, trike, vintage auto, Rollerblade, stroller, scooter and Segway, we prefer good old shank's mare, and we log several miles a day. A good thing, too, because our travels usually involve a lot of calories. When we heard that our friend, celebrity chef Jose Andres, opened a new place on the beach, that was excuse enough to book a trip. The Bazaar by Jose Andres, billed as a traditional and modern tapas restaurant, is in the SLS Hotel South Beach on Collins Avenue. The pairing is brilliant...."
