The original 1940-vintage Shelborne hotel was grand in its day, expanded in 1950 by the architect Morris Lapidus in the postwar building boom that lured vacationers to Miami Beach--

The upgraded property reopens Wednesday as the Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach, featuring a restored floating staircase by Mr. Lapidus, a period fountain and refurbished terrazzo floors. All 200 rooms were remodeled in midcentury style, with geometric patterned carpets, undulating headboards and vintage photos. Aiming for a balance of contemporary and classic elements, the Shelborne will house a Morimoto restaurant from the chef Masaharu Morimoto, and a retro lounge, the Drawing Room, from the mixologist Albert Trummer, who gained notice for his work at Apotheke in New York.
