Fashion Brands at Art Basel Miami Beach

Fashion Brands Take Over Art Basel Miami Beach | Artinfo: "Art Basel Miami Beach isn’t just about the art. Every year, a number of fashion names descend on Miami to join in the festivities. And with a plethora of well-dressed celebrities, socialites, gallerists, and models in town, it makes perfect sense. On December 5, the Art Basel Miami Beach fashion games begin when Interview magazine and Laure Heriard Dubreuil, co-founder of the hip luxe Miami boutique the Webster, host a special viewing of Valentino’s Pop Pois collection on the store’s roof. Later that night, a film made by photographer Bruce Weber forDior Homme will be premiered at the Moore Building in the Design District at a party with W magazine. And finally, Chanel will sponsor’s annual Beachside Barbecue at the Soho Beach House. . . . "

Memo From Miami | Design Now - "you couldn’t turn a corner in the big white Snarkitecture-designed tent without bumping into a piece by Jean Prouvé or Jean Royère, not to mention all the Parisian galleries themselves. I did enjoy looking at the furniture that was part of Le Corbusier’s design for the Indian city of Chandigarh at Patrick Seguin’s booth, or a drab-looking metal screen, designed by Prouvé for a gymnasium, which was expected to fetch six figures at Jousse Entreprise. Suzanne Demisch of Demisch Danant made a case for her (New York) gallery’s solo show of Pierre Guariche, whom she said was “a big part of French design history” but who had been “overshadowed commercially” by his aforementioned 1950s peers. Still, if the consensus was that this year’s fair seemed stronger than the previous six, no one was giving the Gauls all the credit. It’s likely that Design Miami owes a good bit of its increasing cool factor to all the contemporary work on view this year. . . ."

Michael Kaiser: Miami Arts on the Move: "Owing to a series of coincidences, I have spent a great deal of time in Miami over the past year. I have completed a two-year teaching program for arts managers of 60 local organizations, I have been consulting with YoungArts, a national organization that gives talented high school students remarkable opportunities to learn and develop and I have been working with Miami City Ballet to create a sustainable financial foundation. In every case, I have been excited and energized by the artistic community in Miami. When one lists the ten largest arts organizations in the ten largest cities in the United States, one notices that Miami is not home to the biggest arts organizations in the nation. Only one, the Adrienne Arsht Center, has an annual budget larger than $30 million. But one should not read too much into these statistics. Miami's arts organizations seem to be on the move, energized by the growth of the city and the diversity of the population. Unlike in many other cities, where the arts are suffering and trying desperately to hold on to audiences and donors, many arts organizations in Miami believe their best days are ahead of them. . . .
